With the development of slipstream drive, Starfleet looked to retrofit the technology to older spaceframes. The USS Dodwells was the first of the Excelsior class vessels to undertake the extensive refit required to sustain the rigors of slipstream.
The lighting is still a little bit off on this, I'll probably fix it when I try to do a space scene.

This is exactly how I'd imagine a new slipstream Excelsior replacement would look like.
